This is the original lied by Schubert, not Goethe.

I would say it takes more talent for a woman to sing this lied because she has to be deep for the father.

Liszt "transcribed" this piece by Schubert for piano solo. The singer is the narrator of the story so it doesn't matter whether it's a woman or man singing, just that it's sung well, and, of course, Jesse Norman does a wonerful job!

it's just logic, the earlking, father, and son, are all men. A girl could do the kids voice but other than that it's just weird.

That said you need a guy with some MAD skill to do the whole range of the peice
