Muller talks about Irish language's challenges

Despite the fact she was born in England, Janet Muller is the head of Pobal, the group working for the Irish language. We've been talking with her about Irish's situation and its future.

ok....forget bilingual signs.... only gaeilge forget english.....all political messages and meetings should be in gaeilge..Television shows and raidio should be in gaeilge...Then see how many people speak gaelic on a day to day basis..

@lightgirl1 The Protestant community needs to realise that it's just a language and the ancient language of the land you inhabit. Nobody and nothing is stopping you learning it just like anyone else, except for your own small-minded bigotry. There are Irish-speaking Protestants in both North and South already.

@lightgirl1 If you're worried about how Irish is being promoted, then surely the best way to eleviate unionists' fears would be to have it promoted in government by all parties - then represetatives from all sides of the debate could have their say. Refusing to participate and then accusing the Irish language community and its supporters of being "a political weapon" is not a logical argument. You're not dealing with the issue - you're ignoring it and passing the buck.

@lightgirl1 how can the "protestant community" be marginalised? It IS the majority community. No group is calling for monolingual Irish-only street signs/government documents. They're only asking that they be available in both Irish and English. English is the principle de facto oficial language and that would not be changed under any legislation for the Irish language.

irish is the language of ireland and english and ulster scots are immigrant languages just like polish or yoruba or any other language immigrant language. Immigration is good but if you live in ireland you should learn the vanacular just like you would learn english if you went to live in england.

Protestantism is just as native to northern ireland as buddism is

@lightgirl1 Why feel marginalised. make it your own language and it cannot be used against you. Besides, some of the greatest scholars in the Irish language were protestants like for example Douglas Hyde. it is a part of the culture of all of the island of Ireland not just the residents of the Falls Road or Gaoth Dobhair in Donegal.
