In this funk groove, I'm leaning toward the dominant 7th licks. The major sounds work as well but the flatted seventh provides an added bite. Today's sounds are more and more becoming a melting pot of licks, phrases, tones, and ideas. Using these ideas and licks could be just what you or your band needs for that sound to put you on the map. Don't hold anything back.
