GrowingTreeAz, yeah, that's a big part of the movie. There's more, I'm sure. But, as with any real masterpiece of cinema, it's not easy to put a finger on everything that makes Avatar great. Or, any Cameron masterpiece as far as I'm concerned.
But, somewhere inside, you just know its worth all the praise and all the success.
@1etiole I didn't care for the film, either, except for the excellent art direction. Ironically my favorite character would probably have to be Colonel Quaritch -- by the end of the film, I found the Na'vi's self-satisfied attitude to be wholly intolerable, and the "romance" was equally awful (sorry, Tsu'tey!). James Cameron's comments on the film's criticism of the Iraq War also feel awkward -- assuming "unobtanium" was meant to represent oil, very little of our oil comes from Iraq.
baileybushey, Transformers 3 and Avatar are two totally different films. One is based on a highly successful cartoon and commercial toy line. It was fucking guaranteed to make money. The other, Avatar, features a paraplegic hero that double crosses humanity for the sake of a native race of 10-foot tall blue aliens. That is NOT an automatically successful formula.

@LukeLovesRose : "Transformation" says it all. For that's what Avatar is all about.
