On Monday, April 13, the Iowa Senate overwhelmingly approved legislation encouraging the development of methane gas power plants. In an interview in the Iowa Statehouse Rotunda, State Senator Becky Schmitz of Fairfield, an advocate of sustainable energy production, strongly supported the legislation, noting that there is an existing plant in the Amana Colonies and interest in new plants in Johnson and Washington Counties.
Schmitz described the benefits of using methane gas to produce electricity, citing the reduction in carbon emissions and the reduction in landfill waste.
