With the recent bridge tragedy in Minneapolis, a spotlight has shone on the critical role of Minneapolis' new muni Wi-Fi network in supporting recovery efforts. The network, comprised of BelAir Networks wireless mesh nodes, is run by USI Wireless in a public-private partnership with the city. In the hours and weeks following the tragedy, the new network was used to transfer electronic maps and logistical information to the field and to support video cameras used to monitor, coordinate and streamline rescue and salvage efforts. It also enabled family and first responders to communicate effectively when cellular services were disrupted. As Joe Caldwell, CEO, USI Wireless explained: "The network did exactly what it was supposed to do. And it did it amazingly well". Minneapolis CIO Lynn Willenbring, who succeeded Karl Kaiser in June, concurs: "We could not have been as effective if it were not for that." This Case Study outlines the process and diligence that Minneapolis went through to arrive at their ground-breaking public-private partnership and their world-leading network.
