@35mm35 There's a version on YouTube by Amalia Rodrigues that I like. Her voice, even though Portuguese and singing in French, sounds genuinely flamenco.

@dimitrovajunkie, understood. However, you might want to listen to Nana Mouscouri, Placido Domingo, even Jose Feliciano, among others. Paco de Lucia recorded it. That melody is one of the most haunting ever written. It's no wonder people want to sing it.

I'm sorry, I think this sounds overdone and schmaltzy. It has lost the spareness of the original--the sense of dusty Spanish plains and a longing so deep that only a softly strumming guitar can express. Or at least a singer with a less bright voice. The whole thing sounds rushed and too extrovert for my tastes.
