  • live solo version from tinley park is what you wanna hear... incredible

  • totally agree. that was the first one i heard.

  • hey there vincent, i agree with ur POV. BUT the 1st time i ever heared of WG was from Bob Dylan DVD, i heard most of whats available by WG, the message he delivered in his music was historical, put its beyond my taste. the years later i found out about Ani and her attitude, shes an exceptional artist, especially in her playing technique, and i liked specifially how she re-invented suck a classic track by WG, and it bacame a gate I THINK for ppl who dont know WG to search and read about the hero.

  • Oh ! if her interpretation leads people to WG that's great !...

Nonetheless I think that Ani Difranco let her voice through useless frills, shaking tremolos and son on and it does not relate at all to either WG and his message and the spirit folk singing wish is a plain thing...

(however it is true thjat my own taste and inclination tend to plainness, :)))

  • i truly wish i could connect with WG as u do musically :( (i DO appreciate him personally)i really envoy u,,, perhaps cus ur old enough to realize WG association with American history. i dot yet( maybe cus im a foreigner) but i do get the blues... and i do value ppl like u c who get WG message like Dylan did... hopefully one day :`) ill work on reading and learning more ... just to enjoy it as u do. thats what i love about learnin a new culture.. u enjoy their joys even when tears r involved.

  • god this is awful !...

it has lost the fighting spirit of woody guthrie... strings are awdul, arrangements are no better ...

it conveys no meaning at all ...

  • thanx for sharing ur thoughts.. ill put ur comments into consideration. i like Ani's playing n attitude.. n i adore n appreciate W.G. but my ears r not mature enough to enjoy wg original.. i really respect folk music n hopefully ill grow up to wg's genre level one. cant wait.

  • @vincent7520 your taste is boring then.. this version moves!

  • @vincent7520 "This song is Copyrighted in U.S., under Seal of Copyright # 154085, for a period of 28 years, and anybody caught singin’ it without our permission, will be mighty good friends of ourn, cause we don’t give a dern. Publish it. Write it. Sing it. Swing to it. Yodel it. We wrote it, that’s all we wanted to do." ~Woody Guthrie~

Folk music, or music of the people, is kept alive by being sung by the people, otherwise it's just a relic preserved in a vault. In my humble opinion :)

  • @vincent7520 That's the folk tradition... covers, adaptions, evolution of songs. Do you think Woody didn't adapt songs to his own style? He was really big on 'stealing' traditional melodies and putting new words to them, which were controversial at the time. But what people call 'stealing' now really is how music has been played for a long long time in the folk tradition, that's what makes it what it is.

  • wow..not really the same song at all is it? I wouldn't even recognize it had the title not clearly said cover. I think if you're gonna sing Woody Guthrie it should be around a campfire or in a dirty ol' saloon..maybe even in a boxcar..not like this though

  • me too dude! others cannot compare. that is pure ani right there.

uh, even though she didn't write it,

she so coulda though. the way she flipped the original on its head and made it her own, just mindblowing. wonder what i'd think of it had i heard guthrie's first.

    who cares. love it!

    ps. watch mine? :-)

  • I didn't say it was intentional... I just want to point out that this interpretation is way out of WG style and message ...

To me Ani D is close to mainstream music (although I know that it is not for most of her admirers) : she adapts songs and tunes she didn't write or coompose to her way of singing altough it should be the opposite...

That's all ... I don't think we should pursue the conversation any further without trapping each of us in our arguments and saying big mistakes !!!...
