The camera chip from an optical mouse (ADNS-2620) is hooked up to an Arduino and the image underneath the sensor read out. Some simple image recognition allows determining the absolute position of the sensor relative to an optical target with a unique binary encoding (e.g. Gray Code). Absolute X and Y position on the optical target is measured in this case to ~ 70 microns (in this application, only 1 axis needed to be known).
