RCA master 023486, rec. New York, 10 June 1938.
Male quartet, details unknown.
This is the original version of the song, with Rudy Vallées Connecticut Yankees. These gentleman sound quite authentic to my teutonic ears - unlike some of the cover versions of the song. Maybe there is a Hawaiian listener who can tell us if this is the real McCoy?
The group appeared on some of Vallées radio shows, but I think this is their sole commercial recording. I don't think there is any connection between this group and the several "Gentleman Songsters" currently active, but please let me know if I am mistaken.

  • Hi all

im looking for the official name of the song and the preformer

im intrested in getting copyriths for this track.

    thank you for your help.

    Shir.

  • @shirrasta According to the database of the German composers' guild, the official title of the work is "Hawaiian War Chant", composed by John Avery Noble. The original publisher was Emi Miller Catalog Inc. Two companies have currently scores in print: Keith Prowse Music Publishing Co. Ltd. and Bosworth Co. One of these two should be the copyright owner.

  • My most sincere thank you for posting this. This exact version of this song is the one I have been humming and looking for, for many years and finally found it. This version of this song has always been my favorite. I remember hearing it as a child about 1950 and never forgot it. Thank You

  • The pronunciations of the words are horrendous. A'ohe ka 'olelo Hawai'i i keia.

  • This is probably the best or definitive "straight" version of the song

  • The Hawaiian language was supposed to contain a full complement of letters. Unfortunately, on the long canoe trip across the Pacific, all the consonants fell overboard and they had to make do with what was left.

  • Check out Spike Jones version of this song, it's a very well done parody and very funny, from my point of view.

  • Boy, I didn't know Rudy Vallee could swing!
