This video shows the first mile and a half of the Ashton Canal from Ducie Street Junction to Beswick Top Lock No 7.

Earlier this year the government announced that Manchester had been selected as the site for the UK's first Super Casino. This was to generate many new jobs and hundreds of millions of pounds for regeneration of the Beswick area around the Commonwealth Games Stadium (now home to Manchester City FC).

From what we saw in 2004 the area could certainly do with regenerating.

However, it appears that with Blairs departure Gordon "Presbyterian" Brown appears to have scraped the scheme.

  • What's the name of the music used in this film?

  • The piece is called Dragon & Toast and is by a nice man called Kevin MacLeod who makes his music available royalty free on his incompetech sight

  • Who needs the big daft casino anyway.Beswick will benefit from a new Ancoats area which is going to be the New Islington. The City centre will have its boundries increased which will improve the prospects of the surrounding area

  • think yer mostly right son, but Islington is now so Sloane Square you don't want none of that on yer door step. Next you'll be telling me the Bliars are gonna live in a Salford Quays Penthouse. Dour, Presbyterian, Brown knobbed off with yer casino cos he's a git. As a city Manchester, gem of the North that it is, should say balls to every bugger, do its own thing and ger on wi it.

  • they have nearly finished the refurbishment now.

  • That's nice to know. Cheers

  • i rode it(again) yesterday,..beautiful weather/views(from the top)-the best way to hudds! the bridleway is well worn all year round, though the gradient may have you walking at intervals :)

  • Wow - cheers for the directions, Zaskar14!

It sounds like heading left at the Diggle entrance was my mistake. I recall winding up confronted by a barrier bearing MOD warnings of the "go away or get bullets in your backside" kind.

Armed with a printout of your directions and a map, I'm confident I'll find the other end next time.

    Many thanks.

  • ...cont, it's a breeze!4 hours ride from manc centre to hudds. easy to follow without a map, and the downhill from resevoir on the road into marsden is 2miles(plus?)of joy! highly recommended/frequented..safe pedallin'

  • When you get to standedge tunnel, bear right, onto the road(NOT taking the first left)across the bridge, turn left, up the side of a big pub.. climb onto a bridleway to the left and behind the pub towards a farm. stay on the bridleway and keep climbing up to a resevoir near summit, next to the main road. take the road, climbing for a short while and then down into marsden. When in marsden, turn left into the"centre", cross the river and turn right..bearing right, you can't miss the canal.
