They're very good with the integration of theory to mechanics, as we know, and they know how to mate electronics. I have, for years now, one of the simple "coasting" series bikes. It shifts electronically, one-two-three, and runs like a Swiss watch, just a mere clue of what Shimano can do with something obviously more challenging to index than a simple three speed IGH.

According to bikerumor, Campagnolo will announce their version of E. shifter at end of 2011.
To counter this, Shimano is planning to rebadge the current DuraAce version to Ultegra with about half the current price. At the same time, they'll release a new improved version as DuraAce.
It's only a matter of time, SRAM will join the game, probably with some added innovations.

Is this necessary?

0:40 notice how the front derailleur moves slightly to the left to compensate with the high gearing in the rear.
That's the only real benefit you get from these shifters than the non electric one.

very fast.
Necessary? I won't get into that but I will say this is an excellent shifting system and it does work better than a cable actuated system.
