So I was watching this episode of Colbert, and listened to him say this and thought it was one of the funniest things I had heard him say. he was talking with Douglas Kmiec who is a Catholic who was saying the Government should have nothing to do Marriage and it should all be done with a church. Colbert continues to say other quoatable funnies and then says this.

  • Right, cuz only religious people can marry right? And yes marriage is an important part of government,

Also plenty of religions and sects of christianity would marry same-sex couples if allowed.

MARRIAGE IS A HUMAN RIGHT, NOT A RELIGIOUS PRIVILEGE!

  • uhm... how much have you drunk lately? I ask because it is well known to destroy brain cells.

Colbert made fun of "straight" gay haters in case you haven't got it figured out yet.

  • @fatmikecj The thing is though, if we broaden marriage to that point, what does the word marriage mean after that. You'll say I'm married, and if you don't clarify, people won't know if you're married to your brother, two brothers, whatever. I raise the point because for a lot of people, they defend gay marriage by first saying it's a fundamental right, then ignoring other groups of people that might like to have legalized marriage as well. Thank you for the polite response.

  • @joshthecartoonguy You know that's a very interesting point. I can't imagine there'd be many brothers who wanted to be in a relationship with each other, and if there were I'd say that there were some problems that needed addressing first. At the same time I can't think of a reason why not, even though it seems wierd. On the triple marriage thing, again it seems odd, but I don't see why not. Polygamy already happens, and works, in some cultures already.

  • @shadess7

But a human right for which people? What if it's two gay brothers. Why don't they have a human right to marry? What if it's three gay brothers? Is it only a right for two people?

  • Colbert For President 2012!!

  • @RickMojave Marriage is not just a religious thing, if it were atheists wouldn't care about getting married. If you don't see the point of marriage and don't see the point then you don't get it.

  • @kingroy97 after jon stewart of course :)

  • @shadess7 marriage really is just a religious thing. mating is something different. really, politically, i think marriage is pointless institution anyway. i really don't see what the big deal is. :P

  • @IBANEZBB103 When marriage was created it had noting to with morals. Marriage was about producing a heir and to move up in society. In ancient societies same-sex relationships between two males was extremely accepted. The same could not be said for women because women didn't have the same rights as men. There were also same-sex marriage ceremonies. It's believed that the Emperor Nero had two of these ceremonies. Gay marriage was not legal because there was no social gain.

  • @IBANEZBB103 Worst justification of ever. There are tons of things that used to be fine that are definitely not any more. Slavery, racism, sexism, beating children, burning "witch", and the list would not stop there.

  • Stephen Colbert is like the coolest person on earth
