You could sand a rock with silicone carbide paper by hand, and go through several grits. It would take a long time! Then you're still going to need some kind of a polishing compound and a soft cloth for the final finish, but it's unlikely you'd be able to get the friction and speed necessary to get the same kind of shine I get from the wheel. I bought a piece here in Arizona that needs some polishing, since I don't own a fancy wheel like the one you have. Could I have the same polishing material and do this by hand ?
