Woodbine Willie was also a war poet, though now sadly neglected, I feel.
War
There's a soul in the Eternal,
Standing stiff before the King.
There's a little English maiden
Sorrowing.
There's a proud and tearless woman,
Seeing pictures in the fire.
There's a broken battered body
On the wire.

Beautiful song, terribly moving.
Woodbine Willie
Geoffrey Anketell Studdert Kennedy, MC (27 June 1883 - 8 March 1929), was an Anglican priest and poet. He was nicknamed 'Woodbine Willie' during World War I for giving Woodbine cigarettes along with spiritual aid to injured and dying soldiers. he won the Military Cross at Messines Ridge after running into no man's land to help the wounded during an attack on the German frontline.

Just discovered this band by accident. Love Neil Hannon's voice such depth and so theatrical. Love the words in this - My father used to smoke woodbines. Great clip.

TY for posting, brill song, makes me think of a great Friend no longer here,

I got hoocked on the divine comedy by listening "i love what you do" on the radio yesterday for the first time.... i've been tracking every one of their songs on you tube, and each one of them its a jewel, no exception...mesmerizing and magical, you can carry on with the alliterations..
