I had the same problem but it only knocked at hard acceleration, was the tensioner. Yours sounds like rod bearing but could also be a crank bearing. Pull the top end and see if the rod moves up and down. Left to right play is ok.

bad rod not very long,bad cam chain i depends if its bad enough it will jump time and destroy the top end
