I was really interested to hear this conversation about Villette. I love Jane Eyre, but Villette is an equal favorite. After reading it the first time I turned to the first page and read it again immediately. It has so many facets, you don't catch all of the details in the first reading. I choose to believe that Msr. Paul did return, but I know it is left to the imagination.

About the Catholicism question - if you read the reviews of some of Charlotte Bronte's contemporaries, some of them were actually very uncomfortable with her virulent anti-Catholicism.

There will always be different opinions.I have read that in CB's era Catholic church had started to expand in England&she made fun of Lewes for his starting to converting into a Catholic.
There's no question that she's severe with Catholicism, but she was against all ornamental/fancy elements&rigid forms in religion.And perhaps Catholicism had the most of it in her opinion.Then again as an outcast in Brussels it is natural she would cling closer to her religion&condemn those who critisized hers.
