My guess is the 109 he was up against was an F or G variant, which means the Mustang was vastly superior at that point in time, especially if the fuel the 109 had was low quality. The mere fact that a 109 could even keep up with him for that long is nothing short of miraculous.

in terms of range of operation YES, in terms of manouverabilty QUESTIONABLE.

maybe overall in that it could fly far, fight AND still fly FAR home.

@norseleague Germany have low octance fuel or ( synthetic ) due to the bombing of fuel storages early in the war which slowed german aircraft proformance using superchargers with high octane gave peak thurst and rpm

Germany also had experienced vets that flew before ww2 in the cvil war of spain in 1936 some lived on past 1945 Gen Gallant 109F 109E ME262 and was friends with his war foe Standford Tuck DSO DFC with 2 barsafter the war P.S. Tempest ran past 400mph at wars end

I love how all these old guys are now in suits and ties telling the story. Back then it would be a glass of beer and smokin a lucky strike and swearin up a storm.

Later 109s did 400 mph.....but they also had highly inexperienced pilots and too little fuel...
