Baaba Maal

Born in 1953 in Podor in northern Senegal, in a fishing family, Baaba Maal is learned to play the kora and other traditional instruments in the group Lasly Futa, before traveling to West Africa with his friend Mansour Seck and 70 other musicians.

After a stay in Paris where he studied Western music at the Beaux-Arts Conservatory, played music with Wandama, a group he formed in Dakar in 1985, and the group Daande Lenol (the voice of the people) with Mansour Seck. Daande Lenol added modern instruments like keyboards and electric guitar to the traditional Pulars sounds. In 1988 he recorded his first album Djam Leelii.

In 1990 he toured Europe with Peter Gabriel who produced his album Passion. From 1990 to 1993, Baaba Maal recorded three albums that brought him recognition all over Europe. But his worldwide success came in 1994 with the release of his albums Wango and Firin' in Fouta containing the hit title African Woman.
Baaba Maal is also known as the great voice of Africa, but his commitment goes well beyond music, as he is today representative of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). His latest album, Television released in 2009, was produced by John Leckie (Radiohead) and Barry Reynolds (Grace Jones). Thereafter, he went on an international tour.
