A new year of beer, a new year of food. Our project on the seasonal nature of beer, with a little food thrown in for good measure. This week: The Dandy BrewPunks of Fraserburgh strike back with their black lager, Zeitgeist

  • Love Zeitgeist. You said you enjoyed it in the clip but your face and voice have no emotion.

  • @biggatorbite yeah, I was a little surly. Maybe I was in work mode - I had a bunch of beers to get through that evening.

  • Hey! My sister designed that label btw!!!

Cool innit? There was a competition at her University in Dundee and she rather unexpectedly surpassed all others and won. The website and pictures were organised by her as well.

It's sheep heads with human bodies, weird yes, but it's so it appeals to younger people as it's against "conformity" as they say.

    Good on ya Sis'!

  • Hi JS, your sister has done a great job - but I guess she knew that as she won the competition!

I'm sure that when you say "younger" people, you mean people over the legal alcohol purchasing age, right?!

  • Thanks for nice comment. When I said "younger" I meant people in their early 20s. It's not really a 'matured' alcohol, it's aimed at people who enjoy the simple pleasures of life. Nothing advanced about it at all.

If you look at the end of the label it says "illustrated by Heather Brennan."

    I'm her younger brother, Peter : ))

  • Nice to meet you, Peter. Cheers!

  • just ordered 12 bottles, can't wait to try it

  • The design on the label was derived from a central African creature named a heartybeast. It's a unknown creature but that was Heather's unique inspiration.

There were 200 other applicants working on similar depictions for the competition at her Uni. Heather "captured the Zeitgeist."

  • Hi Chad,

the noise is the crappy sound on the digital camera I use. It's annoying, I know, but I hope it doesn't spoil it too much for you.

And JS seems pretty well qualified to answer your other point!

  • BrewDog is based Fraserburgh (a town in Aberdeenshire). Zeitgeist is a german expression meaning 'spirit of the times'.

I've had a taste of it long before the lager was released, knew it would be a hit straight away.
