He is my idol, and he always be. The vignetting in Jesse James is perhaps the most lens manipulation I have seen from Deakins, truly a master!
Cheers

Deakins is the master of going back to basics. For example he believes in never using a zoom unless it is absolutely necessary. He will always use a prime and frame accordingly. It seems to me that he only wants the story to be told how it should be told, not trying to draw the audience away from the narrative with over the top lighting patterns or film manipulation. He is not arrogant at all, he does what he does and he is the best at it.

i just watched the assassination of JJBTCRF and recently saw No Country, and i was quite impressed by the detail and precision of every shot, every single one. since I am still learning the artistic aspect of film, can you tell me why you think deakins is you favourite cinematographer? what are his distinct qualities - lighting, placement, placement, glass reflections - that make him better per se than others?
did you film the full event?

it was my understanding that I was not allowed to, even these small clips I don't know if I really had the right to film. If you are looking for the entire thing, you could contact the film festival and see if they have a record of the event.

interesting question...

I didn't actually ask the question, nor anyone I knew. I was disappointed Deakins didn't really answer it, but that McGarvey did. It was my only chance to get a shot.

are you a cinematographer?

no, but Deakins is my absolute favorite cinematographer. He was Conrad Hall's protege and I loved Conrad Hall, too. The talk was about 2 hours long and they had so many interesting things to say about cinematography and even the new digital age, especially with Deakins being a consultant on Wall-E.
