This famous elephant can be found during the day at Wat Phnom Penh. Around 5 PM he heads home, walking right through downtown.

In 2007, I made my first, but not my last, trip to Cambodia. This trip was to Siem Reap to see the temples of Angkor Wat and to do some so-called 'voluntourism'. I was touched more than I ever could have imagined by the beautiful and indomitable spirit of the Cambodian people.

I became close to my tuk tuk driver and his family. Now I am trying to spread the word about how wonderful a visit to Angkor Wat can be and how transformational an experience it can be to get to know the Cambodian people.

I made a return trip this past September. This time I spent 4 days in Phnom Penh and then 10 days in Siem Reap again.

If you go, I know a great driver for you! See the informational website I have put together for my friend the tuk tuk driver (http:www.angkortuktuk.net).

  • This looks like it might be Sambo. She needs your voice! She is an elephant used for rides in Phnom Penh. She is lame and in very ill health. Her owner prospers off her. He has sent 4 children to college, one in the U.S. Documentation here: tiny[dot]cc[slash]ForSambo

Please join the many wanting to end her abuse. There's a petition you can sign to help Sambo and other elephants – Google: retire-sambo-ban-elephants-in-phnom-pehn

Thank you for wanting to help!

  • @Dele1219 Thank you so much for calling this to everyone's attention. I just signed and will certainly bring it to the attention of my friends.... Could you check the tiny link you left for information.. It didnt work for me (of course after putting in the "." and "/").. Cheers!

  • Gigantic pet

  • Thnks for the visit and comment. I just looked at your profile. Are you from Cambodia?

  • yes, anyway, you should shoot more of the elephant. I went to Cambodia last summer, tried looking for the elephant, but didn't get that chance.....love your vid

  • You Cambodian but sounds like you living outside of Cambodia. Sounds like an interesting story. I believe I have more of him. I will look through my vids. At my guesthouse the owner told me the elephant's name but I forget. And he said he is quite old. He showed me a picture from old newspaper of the elephant when he was a baby, next to its mother and another elephant at the coronation of the King back in the 60's!
