@shoishk If you look back even further, to when the word "gay" was created, it was derogatory slang for people considered loose in accepted morals of the time. It was more aimed at prostitutes and deists and such than homosexuals, but it surely didn't start out to mean "happy" in any broad sense.
PS: Fag first meant bundle of sticks, then largely derogatory slang for women, then derogatory slang for homosexuals.
