Apartheid as an official policy was introduced following the general election of 1948. New legislation classified inhabitants into racial groups and residential areas were segregated by means of forced removals. From 1958, Blacks were deprived of their citizenship. "Sun City" fue una canción protesta escrita (1985) por Steven Van Zandt y grabada por los artistas unidos contra el Apartheid para expresar la oposición a la Sudáfrica del apartheid. Los artistas involucrados (Ruben Blades, Bob Dylan, Lou Reed, Keith Richards, Pete Townshend, Joey Ramone...) se negarían a actuar en el Sun City Resort del bantustán de Bophuthatswana, un supuesto país "independiente" creado por el gobierno de Sudáfrica para reasentar a la población negra.
