Awolowo - Ojoge Daniel

Olóògbé Obáfẹmi Awólọwọ̀ (1909 - 1987), olósèlú, ọmọ orílẹ̀èdè Nàìjíríà lati ẹ̀yà Yorùbá. Awólọwọ̀ jẹ́ olórí fún àwon omo ilé Yorùbá àti òkan nínú àwon olósèlú pàtàkì ni orílè èdè Nàìjíríà.

I wonder who could nt hv ruled those countries "successfully", seeing dt they are organized: Do u know how many races, ethnic & party groups there are in those countries, yet they moved on? As defacto Vice to Gowon, Chief Awolowo's failure to instigate grandstandings d type he did in d West baffles imagination. He learned nothing 4rm d "Carpet-crossing" in the then W/Region Leg/Election & his 20 pounds advice was a script. Forget d Russians! One must love a ppl 2 affect them. Love 1st!

I'm not sure what you mean by 'grandstanding', but you're right: Love 1st.

Chief Obafemi Awolowo indeed loved his people and Nigeria in general. Perhaps you're one of his free-education beneficiary like most elite igbos are.

@igbos27 You are quite correct. Awo is simply one of the greatest across the board. However his inability to capture the imagination of the others is certainly to be regretted. Perhaps it is more of a reflection of the severe undereducation of the Nigeria of the period or simply peronal failings -we will never know. But I suspect that Nigeria will not have been hurt if men like him had executive power over the whole territory. Things will certainly have been different -a bit at least.

Awolowo was a product of his time. He served his country during turbulent times when ethnocetricity was rife and sectional self interests were the order of the day. Ojukwu definitely wanted to break away and there is nothing anyone else could have done about that.

In hindsight though, I really wished the Western Region took advantage of the initial Biafran chaos to declare their own indepenhdence from the clutches of Northern domination. We missed a good window of opportunity.
