The Backwards March has become a tradition at Klezkanada. It is an event that is held just before dinner on Friday evening when the whole camp walks backwards from the lake to the dining hall to welcome Shabbos. It was originally created as a collaboration between Jenny Romaine, Itzik Gottesman and Frank London. Itzik had heard that in a Rumanian town in the 20s "the members of the community would gather by a large body of water and walk backwards singing a melody to usher in the Sabbath". Jenny created the procession and Frank arranged the music, the nigun. And so the Backwards March was born.
