i dont understand how the 1977 MErcedes that started using electric glow plugs start with just one cycle of the plugs at tempatures of 32f with no issues but these pull start diesels 1950's -1976 just have more issues my 240d that is from 1982 has 310,000 miles on it and it has no issues i dont even use a block heater

If you're looking into bio-diesel check some of the you tube videos on algae bio-reactors. I've been thinking about putting one together and growing algae to make oil.

All you need is to clean the engine up, and throw in some new modern glow plugs, I live in maine which is one of the coldest states in America and I can start my diesel vechicles in almost any temperature with a good working pre-heating system.

@BenjaminNelson well do what you like to do lol. my dad wants to do what your doing soon, but take a Deutsch tractor engine that has a 3 speed transmission on it and put it in a dodge dully, because his 1/4 ton truck with a 440 gets pulled over by the DOT to much. but besides the dodges, mercedes are my life and my passion. my dads a mercedes technician and my brother who is 17 does work on cars i wont be able to afford in 10 years....its all mercedes they work on. sometimes other german cars.

@DRNEGOLICIS I disagree quite a bit. My father uses his Duramax everyday to haul lumber and on the weekends we haul around our boat for up to 50 miles sometimes. Its a 2003 and we have never had problems with it.

@musclekid13 actulay they were diesel built from scratch by GM and GM's detroit engine division the duramax was a big mistake they did aluminum block diesel that is a really bad idea as it is the heads fall off of them when you floor it ive seen it to many times they are good grocery getters but wen you try to haul something they blow up
awesome to hear your putting a mercedes diesel in a truck. i had the same idea, but i wanted to put the inline-5 turbo motor in, and run it on my home made biodiesel of course. cheers

Yep, everyone loves the 5-cylinder with the turbo. Too bad I can't find one.
The four cylinder was affordable, and it should fit into the truck real nice. I'm not expecting high horsepower or acceleration. I think I should be happy with the fuel-economy performance from it.

You shouldn't need a block heater if the preglow system is working properly. Also, you probably need to leave it plugged in for longer to properly heat the engine.
You should consider upgrading the engine from the old, slow loop style plugs to the new pencil kind. Is this a 220 or a 240?

In my area, you DO need a block heater for cold starts in the winter.
I will have to look into the other style of glow plugs. Once I have the engine out, there will be a whole list of things to look over before installing it in the truck.
The car is a 1976 240D

@BenjaminNelson it doesnt matter where you live. mercedes has even taken these mercedes to the coldest winters you can find, and even put it in a freezer, and glowed and it started up.

Glad to hear! I am still working on this project, but it's slow because of everything else I gotta do!
