It can also be the splines on the horton fan drive (if it runs a horton) they get noisey at idle as they chatter untill RPM,S pick up!!!

yep, sure sounds like the assy. drive. something about them 400's either in the big or small cam series.

Kevin, Probably ass. drive. Most all the old Cummins do that. I bet it quits when you air compressor kicks out!

Noise related to the air conditioning and metal fan.

I am told if I install a plastic fan, this noise will stop. I also suspect a rotary AC compressor might help. Only happens when the AC is on.

Something between the AC compressor and my fan clutch. Both seem to be fine, working fine but makes that noise at idle. I have checked the fan and the compressor both. It might be the belt vibrating when both are engaged because that is the only time it does it.
