A poem by Alice E. Chase I set to music in the mid 1970's. She calls it 'To my Grown Up Son'. My oldest son, Shiloh, would say, 'Daddy, sing the little boy song"...I didn't know till a couple of years ago who had writtten the poem.

  • Last night when sorting through the few bits of precious papers I deemed important to stow away and couldn't part with when purging my belonging before moving to the UK... I found my worn copy of this poem that both Mom and Dad read to us kids. I googled the poem to find an electronic version to replace my worn, almost unreadable copy and found this song. Brilliant, thank you for this Doug.

  • @TrinityStreetUK Thank you Corinne for the visit and kind comments.as well as the sub. It's amazing how many people have been touched over 4 decades by Mrs. Chases' poems. She passed away last March in Abilene, Tx. She was in her 90's.

I know about those "bits of precious papers". I have several small boxes of cards, ticket stubs, grandkid's drawings and so on...priceless 'stuff'.

Best wishes moving to the UK. May all your events be pleasant and may they be many.

  • Awesome voice! awesome guitar! awesome song! is the first time I hear this song, beautiful interpretation

  • @raph78ael Thank you my friend for the visit and the comments. I'm so glad we have met and look forward hearing more from you. Have a Blessed Christmas.

  • Reminds me a little of Cat's In The Cradle. The tune fits the words well! I like puttying my own tunes to others' poems as well. Great song about the importance of spending time with your kids. I wish I'd done a better job of that myself, and I actually did spend quite a bit of time with my kids when they were little.

  • @guitmartiman Thanks for the visit,Jack, and I'm glad you liked the tune. My wife and I have sang this for years...she has her part and I , mine..we sing the chorus together.

Walter Brennan recorded one of Alice Chases' poems,'Who Will Take Grandma?', back in the 60's. I don't recall hearing it but I can surely imagine him reciting it in my head.

I spent a lot of time with my kids too and don't see them often but the Holidays are good for a visit. Have a Blessed Christmas.

  • @TrinityStreetUK Corinne, this is my testimony as well. The difference is that I 'came by it' after my son was partially grown. I learned from this poem in time for Tommy and his two younger sisters.

Yes Doug, thanks and God bless you!

  • @howellshome Thanks, Randall. I was a $300 a month cowboy on the Fulton Quien Sabe Ranch when my wife clipped this out of an Ann Landers column in the Amarillo newspaper...It's always meant a lot to us...glad you liked it.
