Dogs in yard, with some stills drawn from the video at the end.

The fs100 is a standard-def flash memory palm-sized camcorder, with a good zoom, mic input and manual focus ability.

Image is weak compared with AVCHD, and even some better digital still cams (with video capability). Still thinking about the upgrade to the AVCHD. But file size is a consideration, as is cost (this is about half the cost of the HF100 HD flash mem vid recorder).

This is shot on the Camera's medium quality setting. Highest Quality setting is recommended.

  • btw, I would always use the highest XP mode with this cam.

Hi def is awesome, but the truth is that the average viewer doesn't care.

Did you set your video to allow high quality, or was it just random by YouTube?

I know you can add that code onto any video to get high quality. It looks a lot better.

  • I replied to the HF100 comments, with some questions of my own, below.

I looked in the back end, and found something that seems to allow me to view higher quality video, but not to upload it.

    Where should I look?

  • And while we're talking technical, what about the white blow-out you see in the spaniel's muzzle? POP goes the WhiteOut!

Probably tinkering with the white balance... but it's a hell of a pop.

On the sunny side, the camera does has a remarkable zoom, and is lovely small.

  • It's true that movement is nearly death for images with this camera. The biting issue is that I've gotten better footage with the video feature in the A-series (540, 560) canon still digital cameras.

Do you have an HF100? How's that going?

  • No, but I'm getting it. I know there are much better cams especially high def.

I just don't like tapes and want to wait until Canon catches up with the HV20's quality on flash -- hopefully sometime next year.

I think the fs100 is workable even in some short film type thing, just for online. Not too long ago SD cams were completely acceptable for that.

Movement is bad all around even with the Canon HF100. The dog getting white could have been from the a cloud exposing the sun or something.

  • Interesting observations, and appreciated.

So, you think the HF100 is not up to the HV20/30 level? You like tape over flash/hard drive.

I've been shooting on tape, and where it lacks detail, it retains a fullness, and smoothness.

But who can be bothered? Flash memory or magnetic tapes? Come on, we're spoiled and lazy. Flash memory, of course.

What do you see in the future, in Canon's future, I mean, if not the HF100? (con't)

  • Canon camcorders are good. I'm currently a fan of Panasonic, mainly for the fact that they have great optical zoom, up to 70x (or 78x).

  • are you trying to show the quality of the camera? it's a great camera but you can't edit or upload videos the way you do. use a better program, try to upload non-rendered video or just learn how to use you current program better because this is making the camera look bad.

  • I agree.

  • hmmm...not sure what's going on at 1m51s-1m52s with the dogs.

  • If you export in a widescreen format and with over 640 px wide, it will come out right. For Standard Definition consumer camcorders export at 872x480 at 2500 kbps bitrate. It will come out great on youtube.

  • how did you get the video to be full screen?

most hq videos on here(with the canon fs-100) have to be converted to 640x480 to be hq...

  • how do you compress the files on sony vegas, coz i edited this 3 min video and it was 1gb already! pls help!

  • You can download SDCopy to convert the .MOD file to a MPEG file or something else.

  • could i upload vids from this camera onto my computer one at a time, like not as 1 big video and then edit them in sony vegas? i currently use a canon digi. cam. with video mode, and i'm looking to get this camcorder

  • Adobe Premiere Elements 7! :) David and Charmaine
