I don't know what it was about this show that I found so entertaining, but it's just one of those things you can't really explain. It's not that the show was particularly funny, but it had a certain charm about it that I didn't find in similar shows that depended on a gimmick such as Beverly Hillbillies or Green Acres. There was no pretense about what it was. In the first few seasons, the show did spend way too much time with Homer Bedloe trying to put the Cannonball out of business. When they finally had done all they could with that story line, the show became much better, at least in my opinion. In this episode from Season One, it is Bedloe trying play Scrooge and trying to put the Cannonball out to the scrap heap once again.

  • Did you know that the guy who played Homer Bledsoe only died this year. He looked old for a long time, or so it would seem.

  • Yes I did. And I agree, he was always old.

  • They did this storyline again when they went to colour. Same actor played bedloe. Wasn't a Christmas show though.

  • @truegritwayne

The man who played Homer Bedloe was also famous for another Christma show. He played the bank examimer out to close the Bailey Building and Loan in the now famous Christmas movie "Its a wonderful Life! Charles lane was a wonderful actor. He made many movies and appeared in a LOT of TV shows. I just saw him in a BeWitched Xhristmas episode a few weeks ago.

  • I'm just here for #3!

  • He was also the nasty prosecuting attorney Mr. Whitlow opposite Don Knotts in "The Ghost and Mister Chicken".

  • This show is amazing to watch while drinking a bottle of wine and eating Pringles. Especially if you vaguely remember it from when you were tiny. I'm about ready to move to Nebraska now.

  • I knew I recognized him from somewhere. Long before Charles Lane was on Petticoat Junction, he was in "It's a Wonderful Life" (1946). He was the guy who told Mr. Potter that {paraphrased} "...one day this young man just might be working for that Bailey, it's no skin off my nose..." I agree with truegritwayne - Lane even looked old in "It's a Wonderful Life".

  • Charles Lane died in 2007 at age 102.

  • I remember this show very fondly, i was just a kid when i saw all these but it'll always hold a special place in my heart. Thanks for posting :)
