Jean Shepherd WOR Radio reads Robert Service story of the Cremation of Sam McGee
Jean Shepherd was an American Radio and TV personality, writer and actor who was often referred to by the nickname "Shep". He did a 45 minute nightly live radio show on WOR in New York for over twenty years. With a career that spanned decades, Shepherd is perhaps best-known to modern audiences for narrating the film A Christmas Story (1983), which he co-wrote, based on his own semi-autobiographical stories. As a kid he worked briefly as a mail carrier at a Indiana steel mill and earned his Amateur Ham radio license when he was 14. During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army Signal Corps. In 2005, Shep was posthumously inducted into the National Radio Hall of Fame. More Shep can be heard at; flicklives.com and shepcast.blogspot.com

  • Shep lives!

  • I recall this from his show. Thanks so much for posting.

  • This is Shepherd in his prime--a couple of decades before "A Christmas Story," launched him into orbit. I became one of "the night people," as Shepherd called his fans, but I climbed aboard only a few short months before the great man left radio for ever. He was far more intellectual than Dave Barry, who replaced him as the funniest writer alive. His detractors probably call him pedantic, but his followers laugh that off. This is just great.
