The Rosaceae family, rose family, is of worldwide distribution with 3,400 species and more than 120 genera. Economically important plants in this family include horticultural plants such as roses, as well as apples, cherries, strawberries and almonds. Many of the native Rosaceae species are edible like thier cultivated counterparts. Amelanchier species- service berry, and Prunus sp.- cherry were used by Native Americans as a food staple in the western US.
