Its all a sham. USA complained so they changed the rules...look at gymnastics now...look up USA routines and Russia routines 2010..I bet you would think Russia looks better...but since the rules are so messed up now...USA scores better..not sure why it has to be this way...they should be judged on difficulty, artistic ability, and execution of the routine but for some reason they can only add two numbers anymore. Three is to much.

Shannon was in shape until her injury. She was nailing everything at camp and Vanssa Atler was making fun of her in the OOBN chat nearly every night because she was hitting everything cold.
The gymnasts this period not Mag 7 were over hyped and overrated. They weren't world class. They were decent but not great and that showed in their results.

i think it was because we just weren't that deep compared to the other countries like russia, romania and china during these games. elise ray was good but way overhyped by NBC. kristen maloney had difficult skills but her lack of good form and grace countered her getting a good score. jamie should have been on bars to begin with. going to karoyli camp was good but too late in the game. it got perfect the last 8 years as we have seen awesome results

I would just like to say, Dominique Dawes is GORGEOUS. Especially at 3:13 !!!

The mistake in 2000 was Bela Karoyli! Notice he had NO GYMNAST so he did not really care what happened. Look at his attitude and body language throughout the competition. Pretty much the entire team was on its own and they probably thought if Bela did not care why should they.

I think the change in age limit had more to do with it, than anything else. Because the FIG raised the minimum to 16 (sometime during the Olympic year), team USA was deprived of a number of potential new senior gymnasts born in 1985 -- e.g. Tabitha Yim, who had to wait four more years (and who unfortunately suffered a last minute injury before Athens). As it was, the talent pool was extremely limited in Sydney.

Is difficult to be the best all the time.

That team was barely committed to showing up. It was sad.

Several things happened: the Mag 7 was strong and dedicated, 2000 team wasn't. They just looked out of shape. Shannon was in no shape to compete in Sydney, so a lot of leadership and intensity was lost (because Dawes and Chow were not leaders). Atlanta was a MAJOR home field advantage. Sydney had a mis-set vault. Bela was not as intricately involved in 2000 as in 1996. Those are some of the things that happened.
Wow!
This is great.
