Story:

Looking back, I was never much of a normal person. I still shivered at the thought of my sixteenth year alive. The most normal 16-year-olds faced was unrequited love, drunk driving, and bad cases of acne. Me? I met the Devil's Incarnate. No joke.

My story, however, starts out normally. The summer before junior year was peaceful enough. I spent my days with Nikki, Ryan, my board, and my personal favorite: Mary Jane ... if you get my drift. (;

As the days of summer waned down, I began to dread was what lying ahead for me. Nikki sensed it in me one lazy summer afternoon. "Baby, what's wrong?" she asked me, after I pulled away from our intimate kiss. I sighed. "It's too perfect to last," I told her. Corny, but true. "I know," she said. "What am I going to do when they take you away in 2 days? You're the best I've ever had," she whined. But in a cute way. I laughed.

"But let's not think about that right now. Live in the moment. Let's just..." she faded, nuzzling my neck. It felt nice. I sighed in contentment.

Too bad it didn't last for more than a minute. The instant I heard something rustle outside, I was set on guard. I pulled on a shirt and cautiously peered out the window. "Relax, Jesse," Nikki called from the bed, a few silent minutes later. "You're just being paranoid again." I turned to face her. Her heart-shaped face and alluring eyes beckoned to me seductively. Oh damn...I was happily caught in her snare.

---------------------------

Two days passed by quickly. Ryan and I spent our two afternoons boarding, sometimes exchanging this for chilling with Mary Jane and having some fun time. And my nights? They involved Nikki and one warm bed, of course. (;

So I wasn't too happy on Sunday, September 2nd when they came for me. But I didn't bother with any teenage rebellious resistance. I had seen what that was like. "I'm so happy you're handling this like an adult," commended social worker Linda. I shrugged indifferently. Let them do as they pleased; I wasn't going to forget my roots. Linda went to speak with someone, and I was left standing there, waiting.

"Hey there, cutie," Nikki greeted me, coming up the driveway. She planted a swift kiss on my lips. "Mhm, that was nice," I said. "Guess what?!" she asked me excitedly, getting hyped. It was adorable. I played along. "What?"

"I got you something," she said slyly. Before I could react verbally or physically, she slipped something on my finger. I lifted my hand to observe the metal. It was a small, plain silver band and there was something etched on it. I squinted. In the broad sunlight, I could barely make it out: J.P heart N.M. The heart was a sapphire blue.

"I got one too," she announced, breaking the temporary silence that had been bestowed upon us. "See? They're personalized!" Nikki held up her left hand, revealing an identical ring, except for the fact that her heart was ruby red. "Wow," was all I could muster. I was utterly blown away. "They're beautiful, babe. And they must've cost you a fortune," I said, thanking her indirectly. She beamed. "Anything for you, love," she said, wrapping her arms around my neck and kissing me deeply and passionately. We were in our element until Linda returned.

"Jesse, we better getting going. Say goodbye to your ..girlfriend," she said, pronouncing the last word with utter disgust and dismay. Nikki stuck out a pierced tongue at her. The evident antagonism between these two was fairly hilarious. I laughed a little and patted Nikki on the shoulder. "I'll text as soon as possible," I vowed.

She didn't look convinced. "Promise?"

I gave her my word.

"Goody! Don't forget!" she squealed in delight. I had already stepped into the backseat of Linda's vehicle. As the car sped away, the last remnants of my old home were the van filled with my possessions and a teary Nikki.

"I won't forget," I whispered to the ring. Tacky, I know, but it was called for.
