This idiot decides since he can't see down into the dark porthole on this 5,000 gallon fuel truck... he'll grab his lighter and look down inside. Not such a great idea.

To all the idiots here defending the other idiot with the lighter/cellphone. The trucker (who wasn't the guy on top) has an invoice which lists the amount of product. You cannot "sound" a tanker or use a lighter to see how much is in there. It's something called a "gauge" and it's located at the back of the trailer or on the hose. How do you morons know when to eat?

@Christizm bad luck??? No if this trucker knew anything about hauling gas around, he would have know that and phone cause static electricity and lighters come a flame when in gasoline fumes. He should be lucky his stupidity didn't take anyone else's life with his.... what if it you were pumping gas when he did this and were severely injured or what if a your loved ones were? Would you still be singing the same tune??? I wouldn't...

@1100HondaCB is the hostility necessary this person probably has a family and loved ones he just made a bad decision he was only using the phone to see it was very bad luck that it happened

This is why, when I was driving tankers... even when in my personal auto, I always tell people to, at the minimum... DON'T USE YOUR PHONE. Also... don't do anything, that will cause static electricity. A static discharge will ignite, especially gas vapors.

It was a cell phone he was using, not a lighter, to see into the compartments to check mt. it provided enough of a source of ignition to cause an explosion, the guy died from his injuries.
