In the second part of our two-part series "The Science of Faith," University of Pennsylvania's Dr. Andrew Newberg looks for an explanation for what most regard as inexplicable. He is determined to unravel the relationship between faith and science by studying what happens in the brain during the deepest moments of faith -- or when eight Americans speak in tongues. • Speech mechanism not active - not linking the sounds and "words" to meanings.

All this proves is that the people who "speak in tongues" are quite litterally speaking nonsense.

Of course the part of the brain that processes speech wouldn't be active. That part of the brain deals with gtiving meaning to the sounds you make. If the sounds your making have no meaning, of course it won't be active. You're talking giberish.

  • How about renaming this "Stupid christian oxymoron"!

  • for a good article that just came out about this topic google: marotta religion science argument ignorance

  • that's the science faith has to offer..? deary me

  • The animated way in which this woman talks makes her look like she's trying to keep her balance

  • please, if you are really interested in Dr. Newberg's research, please do a google search and read some studies. don't rely on people who put out shabby videos and don't even go to speak to researchers themselves.

  • She describes other experimental conditions incorrectly. The two scans performed on the woman were done in settings so that everything would be same, with the exception of the fact that the subject was speaking in tongues. She was singing during the 'control' session of the study so has to have language center activated, for example.

  • Even an MRI machine were to be used for this type of study, it would have to be a FUNCTIONAL MRI scan, which shows cerebral blood flow, not simply an MRI scan, which is only structural.

  • As someone who follows this research and is a researcher, I have to say that I am pretty appalled by this video. The woman described the study in a completely inaccurate way. SPECT imaging was performed on the patients. SPECT is a type of brain imaging that involves injection of radioactive tracers into the body of the subject. Those tracers find to specific spots in the brain, based on the receptor for that tracer. This has NOTHING to do with MRI machines.

  • these two vidios should be titled speaking in toungues, not science of faith

you will have noted in acts version the detail of the tongues of fire enveloping the deciples[they were in rapture [proper]but'your'talking in toungues seem in an excited state, not 'the' rapture, people used to get a frontal lobbotomy to cure type type b

true rapture is speaking in foreign toungues UNDERSTAND-ABLE[by foreigners]but spoken by those who dont know the language]
