A chylothorax is lymph fluid leaking into the chest cavity. Most small animals do not survive this. Wigi was very lucky in that she had youth on her side. They removed a total of 255 cc (or 1 cup) of fluid from her chest over a 2 week period of time. Until the vet saw this video I took on my digital camera, we were treating her for a hairball problem b/c she never coughed at the vets office. I dont know if my baby would be alive or not today if I didnt get the idea to video her and show it to the vet.

  • My dog just died of this. There wasn't anything the vets could do. It's sad to see animals suffer. :'(

  • Aww..I am so sorry that your dog couldnt be helped. I am very fortunate in that my Wigi is still with me..she was one of the 5% of the lucky ones.

If anyones pets have this, she has done well with 12.5mg lasix daily and 125mg Rutin daily. You get the rutin from the vitamin store in 500mg tabs and quarter it.

This is what she has taken every day for 3 yrs now and shes holding her own quite well.

Again Ryan I am so sorry about your dog. Its terrible to watch your pet go through this.

  • So glad you said your kitty survived this. My cat was just diagnosed with chylothorax, and we are trying medical treatment instead of surgery. So far she is showing improvement. My Mom's cat had chylothorax many years ago and he survived it as well. I am hoping my Luna does the same!

  • My cat Ashley 10yr old has this. the worse part is they dont know what the underlying cause is and its getting super expensive. We dont know what to do... she is having so much trouble breathing and she is not eating or drinking because its hard to breath.

  • We found out yesterday that our loving cat, Buddy, has this, with 2 weeks to 2 months to live. I'm doing lots of research, but with a tumor between his heart and lungs, I don't think there's much that can be done except another chest tap to remove fluid. I HATE this. He's only 9 years old and is the *most* loving cat I've ever seen in my life.

  • oh no. i just found out my cat has this. we just found out today. this is the worst day of my life!!!!!

  • My TuffyBear has this and has been on very high doses of Rutin for almost 4 years now. Glad to see another survivor. Rutin is the key. He still has an occasional attack like this but it has been years since any fluid was removed. Spread the word. Rutin saves.

  • Just had to put my lovely cat Gary down today because of this. It was awful. After the fluid leaked in, blood soon followed into his lungs. Anyone that's going through this with your pet my heart goes out to you.

  • Sad too see. Good luck. Pets are family.
