There's a good half butterfly guard and a bad one. Here are three ways to recover as they try to pass. 1) Shrimping hook return. 2) Bridging hook return. 3) Shrimp to crucifix.

  • Thanks for the vid, I've been trying to learn butterfly and these passes happen 95% of the time! now I know what to do!

  • Really nice vid! I'm having a lots of trouble vs butterfly guard passes. But this vid really helped me out :)

  • @Aesopian -thanks for the posts. i really like your style. very fluid and technical. hope you continue to share your knowledge here. good luck with your training!

  • Yes, but there are ways to prevent the triangle as you are stacking. You could use the arm that is on the side of the hooked leg to block or pull it out, and you could posture up as bottom guy goes for the triangle.

  • @MbisonBalrog At that point the bottom guy really could triangle because his butterfly hook isn't trapped. Also, from there (a triangle attempt), you can perform a omoplata on the shoulder that is inside the triangle.

Alternatively, the bottom guy could roll back (while being stacked) onto his knees and put this into a neutral position; neither of which you want as the top man.

  • Actually, if you have am arm underneath and grasping one leg, wouldnt you just stack that leg to pass, instead of passing on the side with the hooked leg?
