The Woodvilles had committed Treason by taking action contrary to Edward IV's Will. Richard arrested and executed Lord Rivers and Grey on this basis. The execution of Hastings by all accounts is shocking, however Richard had the power to execute without trial and from his perspective he had been betrayed by a lifelong friend and ally. It’s probably that Buckingham wanted the Throne and lied to Richard about Hastings in order to have him executed, removing him as an obstacle to the Throne.
@MrThorfan64 "Unreasonable" hardly covers it. He marched the man out of the building and had him executed on the spot. No questions, no trial, no mercy. Not so much as a Priest.
