We first met Pugsley on his sophomore album Chicago Typewriter (nickname for a gangster's machine gun). He certainly came out of the radio as someone with a lot more polish than you'd expect in such early work, but I was a little surprised to hear the development he has made on this, his follow-up album. It is often the case that a debut and sophomore will raise expectations, and the third release can let you down. Not so here. Pugsley is back with a more refined version of the blues, done in a Southern style, and done very convincingly. There is a little more polish, but it doesn't take away from the gravelliest voice in this country.

If Tom Waits and Fats Waller had been able to get together and produce progeny - Pugsley would be it.
