A more advanced pen, than can easily be assembled by someone with intermediate/advanced skill. This project is still doable for someone with basic skill, just expect to make a few errors on the way.

No, this question gets asked all of the time but no. A laser pointer thows an entirely different frequency of light. The Wii remote was designed to detect IR light. If building a pen is a hassle you can buy one very inexpensively on ebay. My "mark 5" is only $3.50, $5.75 shipped. I am user shakespeare1212.

Say could you just use a laser pointer instead of the IR pen?

how do you power it? I use 2 AA but it doesnt give off enough IR light to reflect back to the wii mote. do you think my IR led is the problem?
