He plays around with his pinky, holding down an E chord right before the verse.

Its just a common blues prog. E, A, B7 is ALL you need, NO D.

I am pretty sure this is correct.

Also - B7 - is (021202)

so i was way off.

if anyone's interested, i've gathered that the verse is

E (022100) and A (002220) repeating (or some variant on the two);

and then the chorus is D (000232), A (002220), E (022100).

again, it's not exact, but it's a step.

let me know if you think you've got it closer.
