If I remember right. The guy who found her went bankrupt salvaging just this one. The B-17's were beyond repair. I don't think anyone else will be going back....

Nah he didnt go bankrupt, he went and opened a museum to house the lady. 2 years after his death his family sold her to a corporation who now maintain her. The sad part is when Roy was still alive Glacier Girl was a public item(anytime she would make an appearance it was announced), now the corporation wont release appearance info to the public. Its sad really. They are also currently trying to raise the funds to bring the rest of the P-38 squadron home. I hope they succeed

Viper you speak the truth, I am the creator of the the video and unknownjedi posted it for me. IF you ever get to see Glacier Girl live(if you havent already) then you'll know the feeling you get when you see her take to the air. I can honestly say that it brought a tear to my eye (she took off and flew over my head at around 100 feet).

I know there was a lot of people involved in this restore, but I would like to give my father Clyde Trent from Knox county, KY credit for mast of the welding. I made several trips myself to Middlesboro with him to deliver and pick up parts. Roy Shoffner invested a great deal of time and money in "The Greenland Ice Expedition". It is amazing the transformation from when it arrived to the day it rolled down the runway under it's own power. Great history. Bob Cardin really knew his work. Thanks

this story is similar to the mel fisher tale.

he was on a quest to find sunken treasure and suffered many travails but then lo and behold he effin found it. if you're ever in key west go to his museum.

i need to keep track and go to some of these events. once in lexington i saw some ww2 planes and talked to some pilots. cool stuff.

Oh wow. I knew about the recovery effort and all that, but I had no idea they restored this bird to flying condition!  Truly amazing, and my hat's off to all the dedication that took. Keep 'em flying!

My brother and I saw Glacier Girl make her first flight after restoration at the Middelsboro airport. Afterward we stopped to get gas and an elderly man wearing a P38 hat asked me if we saw the flight. It turns out he was a veteran and flew a P38 as well as P47 during the war. I think Glacier Girl is now kept at the Planes of Fame Museum in Chino, California.

This tribute just choked me up! I was lucky enough to see glacier girl perform twice at the wings over houston airshow. This year on halloween, she was in a heritage flight with an f-15e and 2 p-51's, and I couldn't help but cry! I have a video of it on my channel.
