Well, at first glance this looks like all he's doing is what I do when I fall down and scrape my knee. Truthfully, I don't know what to think. I know what it looks like, but I'm not sure of it's effects, and truthfully, where I live in such a small town, I wouldn't have the chance to experience it myself :/

Making the skin raw is not a desire but a way to a means, following the Sha to its extremities is called "chasing the dragon" this requires a fair degree of physical summoning and therefore the top layers of skin pay the price.

The scraping motion causes a vacuum that brings congealed blood (blood stagnation) to the surface where the skin can break it down and recycle it. Areas that are relatively healthy merely go pink and require no more scraping, these marks will disappear within hours. The dark areas that emerge need to be processed through lymphatics etc, after this new blood is able to move freely. I have only treated 12 patients with Gua Sha, 11 had Sha showing but all have increased mobility and energy.

A further point....

I am not saying that it does not provide relief... I am questioning what it is doing. He states that he is bringing 'old blood' or moving 'qi stagnation' where all that it appears to be doing is rubbing the skin raw.

Just because it has been done for a long time does not make it effective (bloodletting was a common 'treatment' for centuries). Unless it can be rigorously demonstrated to be effective then there are no grounds to support it.

marks generally go away within 3 to 4 days, but can take longer if patient has a poor digestive system and eliminative capability

It depends how much redness. Usually it's totally gone within a few hours.
