About Dinu Lipatti, Soo Kian Hing writes that he had: " power, virtuosity and a certain cheeky youthful streak! It was Nadia Boulanger, Lipatti's mentor and close friend, who first coaxed the young and unknown Lipatti into a recording studio for the 1937 recording of Brahm's Waltzes, played as in the original version for four hands (with who else but Boulanger herself, at that time already a celebrated pianist). Brahms' Waltzes are nothing like Chopin's more full-bodied ones; rather, they are miniatures, a "series of variations based upon the ¾ meter" (quoting Dame Moura Lympany). Instead of playing the selected waltzes in numerical sequence, the creative programming of this set allowed them to flow smoothly from one to the next. "
Brahms op.39 nos.6, 15, 2, 1, 14, 10, and once again, 6.

  • This is an impressive performance, by the two graet Pianists. Both play in harmony as well as passion. Thanks for sharing.

  • WOW! So glad we have this!

  • Funny: when this recording was published, the record label stated: "executée par mesdames Lipatti et Boulanger". Lipatti was unknown at the time!!

  • I am searching entire evening for a decent performance of these waltzes. Finally , there's one. I had no idea it's so difficult to play this music. It really takes a piano masters to play it.

  • 100% wonderful!!! Perhaps only the julius katchen version are as good, but only

the 2 handed version. Also the 4 handed version of Walter and Beatrice Klein

are very nice. Thanks so much for sharing this. I wonder when it was recorded.

  • a real ginius ,thank's for sharing ,,,,what a tuch ,,,unbelivble

  • Lovely playing! Btw, before they repeat no. 6, they first play no. 5 (starting at 5:49).

  • Brilliant !

  • Brahms sings with a tender but passion-

ate heart in these wonderful waltzes.

He marveled himself that a man from

Hamburg could write them at all! Lipatti

    and Boulanger play with spontaniety,

and inspiration! Thank you for sharing!
