Ctrl.Alt.Shift is a movement for a new generation fighting social and global injustice. These films were made by members of the community to raise awareness of issues they care about.

This Episode: Film Competition Winner

A verbose and politically correct bureaucrat gives a lecture to a group of teenagers on the merits of the UK's efficient and humane asylum system, whilst meanwhile, in the same building, detainees, imprisoned indefinitely in different 'Removal Centres' across the UK, leave messages in vain on an abandoned telephone answering machine in the ministry basement.

Their messages detail the horror of the life that they have escaped due to conflict.

Writer and Director: Tim Travers Hawkins
Mentor: Chris Harding (Shynola)
Music: Jesca Hoop
Voice of Bureaucrat: Adam Buxton

  • If you want to think about refugees on a base level: read their stories. The risks some of them take to get to the UK (or anywhere else in the Western world) often includes periods of travelling on tiny leaky boats, in undercarriages of vehicles.

They spend hours in hunger and the darkness & many of their fellow travellers die along the way. Now do you really think they would make such a journey simply to be "benefits theives"?

  • So seriously you would sell everything you own, scrape every penny together to make a long treacherous journey where you may or may not die just because you heard another country will give you a free house?

    Seriously?

I suggest you have a wander around the Sangatte refugee camp in Calais. Your image of refugees is crazily skewed

  • I like the reference to Foucault's panopticon.

  • So because some of them get into criminal activities does this mean immigration should be stopped entirely?

I mean you don't throw the baby out with the bathwater...

I do agree UK immigration needs to be drastically slashed to let the current population merge and absorb the new arrivals and for the new arrivals to absorb the UK (so to speak).

I don't think it's their fault personally, I think it's the governments fault for having such lax benefits schemes.

  • Well obviously a house and the surroundings here would be better than what they already have, so yeah.

They are not given the car keep of course, they are loaned it. And this country has enough problems without wasting money on these people.

And this video makes them all out out to be decent people, but from experience this is not the case at all. Not all of them, but a lot of them just get into criminal activities.

  • Housing and money to eat/survive are basic requirements.

I wouldn't deny them that. These people arrive with nothing.

Who the hell gives them a brand new car?? I know the DSS doesn't hand them out...

Funnily enough they do get priority treatment - because they have nothing.

  • Yes.

This video isn't even true for a lot of them. The ones i see in my area are given housing, money, and a new car thats better than the one i have. While they wait and see if they are going back home or not. Better treatment that a U.K citizen would get. It's disgusting.
