Calico did WNEW's "The Choice" graphics in 1980, so kresblain is probably right. This opening was also adapted for some of the Times-Mirror stations (i.e., KDFW, KTBC) news intros later in the decade.
@catnap1972 Don't quote me on this, but the animation style shown here seems to have come from the Calico studio. Flashy special effects and that cheesy '80s animated still camera photo montages were their specialty during that time.
I don't know but I remember that when I was little they would sometimes do early morning newscasts with the still for each topic. The newscaster would voiceover instead of appear onscreen. I may be wrong but I remember seeing them do it before going off-air once or twice.
Does anyone have the opening that came after this one?

This is the version I love, with the graphics rather than the live shots. Thanks!!!

Awesome--I was waiting for someone to finally repost this one. Didn't the animation they used have a trademark name?
