Sand Castles

This project was headed and designed by Ian lodge who I assisted as part of my year long apprenticeship at Cal-Earth in 2007.This house is 5 connecting domes that was built in two months. The location is Pescadero, Baja California Sur, just south of Todos Santos Mexico. Hmm...It looks like a SEA SHELL!!! :D The house had a kind of "spiral" effect to the domes and since its next to the water it just adds to the effect...I want to build one of these homes so badly!

Thanks for viewing the slide show. The Eco-Dome DVD from Cal-Earth is instructive. It is possible to learn how to build from this movie and also Earthbag Building by Kaki Hunter and Donie Kiffmyer. Cal-Earth also has a book called Emergency Sand Bag shelters which is good for challenging building codes. My partner and I teach this technique in 5-10 day workshops.

The main dome diameter is 16 ft, the two bedroom domes are 14 ft, and the bathroom domes are 10ft. I put up this video, took most of the pictures, and was an apprentice on the project. Check out our newest video at guiding star creations channel. Neil Decker

why did they not build an arch as a doorway, i mean they cut out a big square for the door and put in plywood hurray and it would have made the structure more strong
