'Strange Girls' was a fantastic live band formed by Toyah Willcox and original band members of 'Girlschool' in the early 1990's (including Cris Bonacci, Kim McAuliffe and Enid Williams). They toured twice in 1991 performing a mix of cover versions, Toyah and Girlschool classics and original material, of which this is one example.

By the 2nd tour they were performing quite a few new songs but sadly a recorded release never materialised, though a couple of tracks went on to appear on Toyah solo releases. Notably rare, the SG gigs featured Toyah playing occasional guitar, though it could be a little suspect as to whether they plugged her amp in!

This was an acoustic session recorded on Greater London Radio in 1991 whilst promoting London gigs on the 1st tour. They also performed 'Not the Woman I Am' and were interviewed by Emma Freud. Drumming was by Lydie Gallais on a piano stool!

The photos were taken by me at various gigs, which I have to say were some of the best fun Toyah related gigs I can remember. After a few one-off gigs (including supporting the Beach Boys in Germany!), Toyah went on to another brief project with 'Kiss of Reality' and then back to solo work. Girlschool went back to being Girlschool, and both are still recording and gigging to date.

  • I saw them at Borderline in London - 30 May 1992.. was fantastic!! My car got clamped but was still worth it.. lol.. This song doesn't do them justice!

  • @fransta yeah I was at that one too - great gig and venue like you were on stage with the band. I agree the songs worked much better electric and there were some brilliant songs that were never recorded

  • I saw them at The Borderline with Toyah too...in fact I can see myself (just) at a corner of the stage in one of these stills!

  • Yeah.. I actually got to play that venue myself a few years back... was very intimate with the audience, although you need to watch yr head on the lighting rig if you jump on the stage!! lol... I'm hoping to catch one of the shows coming up with the new band... will be good to hear the old stuff live again.. and the new stuff! :) Keep rocking lady... cos you sure do it well!! lol

  • shame they never recorded anything ;-(
